Welcome to historic Steinwehr Avenue—Gettysburg’s Place to Be!

At the southern end of Gettysburg, Steinwehr Avenue is part of the original Emmitsburg Road, which exists today beyond Gettysburg’s borough limits. After the Civil War and the now-famous Battlefield of Gettysburg, a section of the Emmitsburg Road was renamed to honor Gen. Adolph von Steinwehr, who commanded a division in the Union’s 11th corps during the battle. The division largely was made up soldiers from German descent.

Today, Steinwehr Avenue and its neighborhood retains its historic reputation and is regarded as one of Gettysburg’s true neighborhoods with its eclectic shops, souvenirs, galleries, lodging properties, speciality restaurants and museums and attractions.

The neighborhood is an official Business Improvement District, oversee by the nonprofit Steinwehr Avenue Business Improvement District with management by a board of directors made up of representative neighborhood businesses. Oversight is provided by Main Street Gettysburg.
